Libros Para Pueblos

Libros Para Pueblos locates and works with villages in Oaxaca, Mexico that want a children's library. The community prepares the space and sets up their own system of maintanence and book checkout. Libros Para Pueblos works in an advisory capacity and purchases the books. All Libros Para Pueblos libraries belong to the community where they are located and are maintained by the villagers.

   We also hold regular workshops for Libros Para Pueblos librarians who come from all over the state to have the opportunity to exchange ideas and develop working relationships between our various locations.  The growth of Libros Para Pueblos comes from these workshops. We learn directly from the communities what they need next and where the program and the collection need to be modified.

Researching, reviewing and buying books is a big part of what Libros Para Pueblos does. Children's book publishing is precarious business in Mexico because reading for pleasure is not part of the culture. Keeping libraries vital and growing means constantly searching for new titles and authors. If you know of a source of Spanish language books for children or young readers please let us know.
